Round 5 – Barcelona

You may be surprised at how late I am posting this but unfortunately I wasn’t able to watch the race this weekend and unexpectedly didn’t have a lot of time to do any posting on Friday.  Barcelona was the first of many that I will miss this summer thanks to the fact that I will be working for TECS summer camps again this year.  This weekend I went to a training planning weekend with a number of other staff, which meant that we worked an awful lot, had quite a bit of fun and very little sleep.  We were also secluded away at one of the camp venues in the countryside so I didn’t hear anything about the result of the race till Monday morning.

I am a little upset that McLaren and Williams didn’t do so well, but in terms of the predictions I made against my students I did quite well….

1st Alonso Alonso Hamilton Webber
2nd Hamilton Vettel Alonso Alonso
3rd Rosberg Hamilton Button Vettel
4th Massa Massa Vettel Schumacher
5th Button Webber Rosberg Button
6th Kubica Rosberg Massa Massa

Round 4 – China

After a break of a few weeks the next round of teacher vs student is upon me.  Unfortunately none of us submitted entries for Malaysia as we didn’t have classes that week but four of my students have given me predictions for the next race.  We were all at a disadvantage when we made them as we had to make them in our class on Tuesday without the benefit of having read much in the way of preview information or knowing about today’s free practice sessions.  I’m hoping to score more than 1 point this week and also that I’m not jinxing my drivers.  Ignacio, who unfortunately didn’t score any points last week was particularly wary as he felt he’d jinxed his Ferrari drivers in Australia!

So here they are:

Gonzalo Alvaro Ignacio Bea Me Actual result
1st Hamilton Alonso Webber Hamilton Button Button
2nd Alonso Vettel Hamilton Alonso Vettel Hamilton
3rd Vettel Hamilton Alonso Massa Alonso Rosberg
4th Massa Massa De la Rosa Vettel Schumacher Alonso
5th Rosberg Webber Massa Webber Rosberg Kubica
6th Kubica Kubica Kovalainen Kubica Webber Vettel

Round 2 – Australia

This week all but 1 of my ‘J5′ students have submitted entries.

Gonzalo Alvaro Ignacio Bea Me Actual result
1st Vettel Alonso Alonso Alonso Vettel  Button
2nd Hamilton Vettel Webber Hamilton Alonso  Kubica
3rd Alonso Massa Rosberg Massa Hamilton  Massa
4th Massa Hamilton Hamilton Button Massa  Alonso
5th Rosberg Webber Massa Schumacher Button  Rosberg
6th Webber Rosberg Button Rosberg Webber  Hamilton
Points  4  3  0  3  1

Following Australia I’m appalled to see that Bea has managed to score better than me and that instead of going with my heart, which would have scored me at least 5 points I tried to be cautious and sensible instead.

Teacher Vs Student F1 predictions game

What is it?

The idea started as a little game in class a few weeks ago just before the start of the season.  Some of my teenage students are keen followers of F1 like myself so I thought it would be fun to have a mini predictions competition with them.  The challenging thing about this competition though is that our last class of the week is on a Thursday evening, this means we must all make our predictions without the benefit of knowing the results of the Friday practice sessions.  I’ve decided to start a separate blog page for it as it is easier to manage.  Also it will be easier to direct my students to this page to check their standings.

How does it work?

We are going ‘old school’ with our predictions, and only choosing who we think will finish in the top 6 as these are really the only positions that count ;)   For correctly predicting the winner you get 5 points, for correctly predicting any of the other 5 places you get 2 points and for a ‘near miss’ (predicting +/- 1 place) you get 1 point.  We’re not predicting qualifying positions as drivers don’t get points for qualifying so neither do we!
